Business History

The genesis for Ocean18 dates back to 2002.  I had been working for about 4-5 years in local radio and had began to feel the limitations of providing marketing to businesses through one medium. I returned to the once beloved Whale’s Tale restaurant and begin plugging away at my idea of an internet based portal through which Lincoln County could: Listen, Read, Watch and Talk. This was the first logo.

The idea was a little ambitious for the times and my skill set.  A fully interactive site was difficult to execute.  Dial up internet speed was the norm.  Eventually, I would abandon the idea and continue in radio and for a short time experimented as a phone directory sales executive (not my cup of tea.)  During this time I continued to develop a skill set in multimedia production:  web development, graphic design audio and video production.  As my adjacent hobby evolved with Web 2.0  – I realized the  timing was perfect to fly solo.

Circa 2004, I left radio again and invested my savings in a 3CCD video camera and began freelance work in Lincoln County.  And, while it is important to be able to deliver an effective product (videos, web sites, ads, etc.)  the hardest part about surviving as a freelance designer is developing a relationship with clients in such a way that allows for a realistic budget that can create an impact in the community in a meaningful way.

What I have discovered over the years is that communication is an essential tool and a perennial activity that needs constant massaging.  From talking to our loved ones to wishing we had a DVR to skip through the adverts:  human beings are a curious and innovative about interrelating.   If we take a systemic approach to improving our communication skills we increase chances of being heard as we want to be recognized.

I recently moved the Ocean18 web site into the WordPress architecture. Thus, a rather blank canvass for the time being: beta version 18.1c. More content is forthcoming! Check out the previous Ocean18 web site if your in the mood!

I am also very excited these days at the potential of the WordPress product for quickly building your own blog/web sites. What you see before you is the simple use of the WordPress formula.  It’s an easy way to develop content quickly. However, you may sacrifice the customization when you choose the less expensive formula. So, keep that in mind when choosing template driven solutions. In order to express your “brand” in a more unique way a design professional and programmer may be necessary with WordPress, Flash or HTML.

Recent projects have included getting Panini Bakery online! We are now under construction… Joe is in the digital age. Can you believe it?! Lot’s of views for the local clients who are streaming video… go get ‘em team! Many emails lately have inquired about the video work flow. I have been shooting video with the Canon 60d, edit with Vegas Pro 10, Intel i7 processor/24gig RAM. The HD you will find linked here has been shot with this DSLR.
